Professor Roth served as a script consultant for a movie, The Descendants, which won the Academy Award in 2012 for best screenplay. The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and other publications described his involvement and commented favorably on the script’s skillful treatment of complicated legal issues.  He later wrote Deconstructing The Descendants: How George Clooney Ennobled Old Hawaiian Trusts and Made The Rule Against Perpetuities Sexy, which appeared in the American Bar Association’s Real Property, Trust and Estate Journal; and, along with his son John, wrote Art Imitates History, which appeared in the Hawaii Bar Journal.

Roth also had written, lectured, and testified in court extensively regarding Hawaii’s historic private and public trusts, such as Queen Liliuokalani’s (with Sam King and Walter Heen).
