This is not a Price of Paradise episode: Randall Roth appears as an interview subject on Community Matters, a different program, questioned by interviewers Linda Coble and Ken Carpenter. Roth traces his background — a Kansas upbringing, 17 years in Hawaii, a career teaching trust law at the UH Law School — and explains how he assembled roughly three dozen off-the-record sources, including eventual co-authors Samuel P. King and Gladys Brandt, before the Broken Trust essay took shape. He describes the co-authorship as collaborative and notes he was in the minority on almost every 4-1 vote. Roth assesses the Attorney General's investigation as moving in the right direction, despite trustees spending substantial estate funds on litigation to slow it down, and says he expects at least three trustees to be removed once it concludes. He argues trustee selection is a larger problem than trustee performance — the appointment of politicians without relevant credentials is, to him, more damaging than the resulting misconduct. Coble and Carpenter also ask about cuts at the University of Hawaii and whether Roth has political ambitions; he says he enjoys teaching, won't run, and suspects he would turn down a judgeship if offered.
