The morning after 400 community members gathered at Honolulu's Japanese Cultural Center for the Honolulu Advertiser's Tomorrow Conference, Roth, Peter Adler, and Tom Brislin assess what civic journalism of that scale can accomplish, joined by Jerry Burris by phone. Adler, who facilitated both the conference and the governor's Economic Revitalization Task Force, finds more overlap than conflict: both groups called for tax cuts, tourism investment, government efficiency, and regulatory streamlining, though they split on the Land Use Commission. Brislin raises the inherent tension of newspapers staging events to generate their own news agenda, asking whether ideas that run counter to the Advertiser's editorial positions will receive equal coverage. Burris says he came away with a renewed sense of the paper's duty and a long story list. Two conference attendees call in: one praises the day's energy but notes many voices were cut short by time; another argues that Pacific Islander and native Hawaiian participants were underrepresented. Callers question whether the conferences are putting strategy before vision, and whether Hawaii has too many overlapping forums chasing similar goals.
